Could you tell the male to female ratio of any area by randomly counting males and females while turning left?

While sitting at a busy intersection in the left hand turn lane, I sometimes count how many females and females pass me before the light turns and wonder if it is a good indication of male to female ratio for that particular area.I have also wondered if this random sampling could give you more information on any locality
