Do hockey coaches determine goalie style?

It has been said recently that Tim Thomas is a pretty aggressive goalie, meaning he likes to leave the crease to take away the shooter's angle. There are other goalies that like to stay a little closer to the net. My question is do the head coaches tell the goalies to be this way or do the goalies play the way they want/feel comfortable and coaches just deal with it?
